During colonial times, traditional African medicine was dismissed as a superstition and witchcraft.
Great efforts were made to introduce modern, western forms of medicine into Africa where often very expensive and not always appropriate.
Today, there is increasing interest in the work of traditional healers using herbal medicine.
In Ghana for example, the Traditional Healer's Association (T.H.A)has 30,000 members and caters for the needs of three-quarters of the population.
The herbal medicines used by these traditional doctors have two big advantages over modern western drugs and they are cheaper and more easily available.
